Cameron steps up economy attack
Conservative leader David Cameron, has accused Gordon Brown of inflicting a “terrifying” debt crisis on Britain and called the VAT cut a “joke”.
Mr Cameron told BBC Radio 4’s Today that Mr Brown might as well have gone out and burnt the money and said he felt like “shaking the prime minister”.
He said he would set out plans to help savers in a speech later.
His criticisms came as both his party and Labour seek to gain the initiative over handling of the economic downturn.
‘Debt crisis’
Mr Cameron told the BBC: “These are extraordinary circumstances we are facing, very difficult circumstances and we have to be clear about the landscape.”
He said government had led the country into a “debt crisis” and the economic downturn was also a key factor.

More from Today programme
Calling on Mr Brown to “get with the programme” the Tory leader said what was needed was more saving than borrowing.
“We shouldn’t use this as an opportunity to tear up the market and go back to 1970s style interventionism,” he said.
David Cameron will use his speech later to claim the longer Labour are in power, the worse the nation’s financial situation will become.
The BBC’s political editor Nick Robinson said he believed the Conservative announcement on savings may be to abolish taxes on savings for basic rate taxpayers.
This would create a clear political dividing line, he added, between a Labour government committed to state intervention to inflate the economy and the Tories calling for a smaller state and tax cuts.

Meanwhile Gordon Brown will be discussing help for businesses trying to cope with the economic slowdown.
This is as a prelude to a three-day tour of England and Wales by the prime minister, which will culminate in a jobs summit in Downing Street next week.
Ministers are working on that, but are not yet ready with the answers, our correspondent added.
On Sunday, Mr Brown defended his handling of the economic downturn, saying the government “must play its role” and that 2009 would be “challenging and difficult”.
But he insisted he was right to use fiscal policy to secure the economy and that it is his priority for the year.
The government also said it is mulling over further plans to encourage UK banks to raise lending to firms and households, with Chancellor Alistair Darling stating that pumping more state cash into banks was not the “first port of cal

the arizona cardinals have dominated the third quarter of today’s wild card playoff game, turning a 17-14 halftime deficit into a 28-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter. the second half couldn’t have started much better for the cardinals: on the second play of the third quarter, a botched falcons handoff was fumbled and plucked out of the hauteur by cardinals refuge antrel rolle, who raced 27 yards on the side of a touchdown to give the cardinals a 21-17 supremacy. later in the third, cardinals running back tim hightower scored on a four-yard touchdown run to give the cardinals a 28-17 lead, and then arizona started to rain cats it on: on the falcons’ senior tease after the ensuing kickoff, cardinals cornerback dominique rodgers-cromartie showed off his incredible vertical jump as he leaped into the wind and picked nutty a matt ryan pass.the cardinals had to wager on their next possession, and the falcons hold the ball heading into the fourth, but atlanta now has an uphill climb to keep its season alive.

2009 Predictions from The Pros At PSFK
Tired of 2009 predictions yet? I’ve had no less than a dozen requests to contribute to compilations of predictions for the next year and have participated in a few. So, clearly I’m part of the problem if you’re up to your ears in predictions from bloggers about what the next year will hold. Sometimes in the frenzy for all of us to put together our own predictions, we can lose sight of the fact that there are people who’s entire jobs it is to pay attention to the trends happening around us and to put them in context. There are several sites devoted to this, and PSFK (one of my favourites) just released a book well worth picking up.
Suspect in Christmas-gift bomb plot found dead
Your first reaction will probably include sticker shock (the softcover version is $50) - but once you delve into the ideas there, you’ll likely consider it a bargain when priced against much longer reports from industry analysts about what trends to pay attention to in the future. Not only will the 9 “good ideas” shared in the book get you thinking, but you’ll also get introduced to lots of sites you’ve never even heard of, including:
www.minkangdesign.comwww.tikitag.comwww.innocentdrinks.co.uk (Disclosure: Innocent Drinks are also mentioned in my book.)www.twones.comwww.longnow.org
Just about the only complaint I had about the preview copy that the good folks at PSFK sent over was that the printing execution done through Blurb clearly must have driven their art directors crazy as it cut off words and images in several places and lacked the sort of high quality design experience overall that anyone familiar with PSFK will have come to expect. Still, despite the print version shortcomings, the ideas in this book will inspire your thinking into the new year in a way that no blog posts (no matter how well written) will do. For that alone, it’s worth a look.

Cincinnati Grandma Robbed Banks to Support Son

Sixty-eight-year old Barbara Joly plead guilty to robbing Community National Bank in Cincinnati, Ohio, last March. Joly is also the suspect in two other bank heists. The reason why Joly robbed the banks: she wanted to continue sending $4,000 a month to her son who had “fallen” on hard times “years ago”. Yet Joly isn’t the only “granny” to hold up a bank, nor is she the “oldest” person to commit a bank heist.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Joly, a former bank teller, turned to robbing banks after her husband stopped her from sending the $4000 a month to her son.
Joly didn’t use a gun and wore a blonde wig, sweatsuit, and white gloves in the Community Bank robbery. The same m.o. in the other two holdups that Joly has yet to be charged with. Joly will most likely receive probation as part of a plea deal.
In 2003, a 91-yr-old man was arrested as the suspect in a bank robbery in Abilene, Texas.
J.L. Hunter Rountree allegedly made off with $2000 after he asked a bank teller to “stuff” a large envelope with “robbery” written on it. Rountree had been released from a Florida prison a year earlier after serving a three year sentence for robbing a bank in 1999 in Pensacola. At the time, Rountree was the “oldest” inmate serving time in the state of Florida. Rountree’s arrest in Abilene made him what authorities believe to be the “oldest” bank robber in American history.
Rountree died in a Springfield, Missouri, prison in 2004 at the age of 92. A judge had sentenced Rountree a year earlier to 12 1/2 years in prison, which if he had lived, he would have been a 103, and most likely the “oldest” prisoner to be released from prison.
Joly isn’t the only “grandmother” to rob banks. In 2006, 75-yr-old Marilyn Devine was arrested after robbing a bank in Pennsylvania.
Devine had worn a ski mask and carried an “unloaded gun”. Devine’s take: $6,000.
Devine, a former Korean War Veteran, teacher, and Veteran’s Hospital Nurse, plead guilty in March. Ironically defense attorneys for Devine claim Devine suffered from anxiety and depression after her son “called her the night before and said he was going to do himself in unless she could get him some money”.
Devine’s husband was at a local American Legion Hall when the family mechanic “ran from across the street” and told Devine that he heard on a police scanner that an “elderly woman driving his wife’s car had just robbed a bank”. While the first reports of Marilyn Devine’s arrest claimed Devine had led police on a high speed chase, the true story emerged during Devine’s trial:
“The following morning Mrs. Devine took her husband’s unloaded pistol from his sock drawer and headed to the mall. With a hooded coat and a black-and-gold Steelers scarf masking her face, she held up the bank and then led West Mifflin and Baldwin police on a short chase, weaving through slow traffic, until a Baldwin tow truck driver, who was also tuned into the police scanner, blocked her way.”
Marilyn Devine was sentenced to 23 months of house arrest, 20 years probation, and ordered to pay $10,000 for “victim’s duress”.
